7 Best Japanese Tea Sets: For A Thirsty Soul

You might not know this, but Japan is known for its tea.

Not only do they have an extensive history of brewing the stuff, but they also have a lot of fantastic tea sets.

And if you’re anything like me, you probably want to use those tea sets in your home. But where do you start? How do you choose which ones are best for you?

We are here to help you make an informed decision about your purchase. Why?

Because It’s not just a cup of tea, it’s an experience.

The Japanese have a ritual for drinking tea. First, pour hot water over the leaves, wait for them to bloom, and then drink the tea from a porcelain cup.

Look no further: we’ve found seven of the best Japanese tea sets!

What should I look for in a tea set?

The first thing you should look for in a tea set is that it is made of porcelain, ceramic, or cast iron.

I bought a cast-iron tea kettle because I once had a wood stove in my office. It was good to have something that could function as an appliance for boiling water and heating tea.

(But I learned that you would never boil water in a Cast iron teapot, more later).

You should be extra careful when handling porcelain tea sets, as they can easily break.

Neither of these items can be used to boil water or heat tea leaves. They’re just for show!

You must boil water in another pot and then pour it into your porcelain or cast iron tea set.

Some ceramic products are microwave safe, but I do not recommend microwaving your tea set.

You lose some of its flavor when you heat tea in the microwave.

This is because some compounds that give tea flavor are destroyed by high heat.

Use a boiler and then pour it into your tea set.

You should never put cast iron in the microwave, and it’s best not to add hot water all at once.

It’s better to pour some water in and let it sit for a few minutes before adding more hot water.

If you have a tea set made of porcelain or ceramic, follow the same guidelines above for those vessels.

You can add your filter and tea leaves when the Teapot is full of water. Place the lid on top of the Teapot and steep it for the recommended time (see below).

As you can imagine, choosing the set type depends on your preference or needs.

How many times can you make tea with one set of tea leaves?

You can make tea with the same leaves three times (on average), but the flavor will weaken each time.

Ps: Do not leave the teacup half filled; add more water until it’s complete. If you leave the cup half-filled, the tea will continue to brew and become too strong.

Are Japanese Tea Sets made in Japan?

Most tea sets are made in China.

Japanese companies have been moving their production to China for years, so finding a set made in Japan is difficult (unless it’s an antique).

I’ll update this post as soon as I find a company that sells reasonably-priced products.

How to Clean a Japanese Teapot?

To clean your Ceramic or Porcelain teapot, rinse it with water from the tap to remove loose dirt and dust. Then fill it with warm water.

Do not use soap or any other cleaning products. Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub the inside of your Teapot and rinse it well with clean water.

Do not use abrasive materials on your Teapot, as they may damage the surface.

To keep a cast-iron teapot clean, rinse it with warm water after each use and allow the Teapot to cool completely before cleaning.

To clean the inside of your Teapot, use a soft sponge and warm water. After rinsing the Teapot well, use a soft cloth to dry it thoroughly.

If you want to remove hard-water deposits, fill the Teapot with water and bring it to a boil over high heat.

As bubbles begin forming on the bottom of the Teapot, pour out the water and place your teapot upside down on a cooling rack.

Let it cool completely before using it again.

For rust stains, brush the area with a soft brush and then fill the pot with used tea leaves. Pour in boiling water and sit for 20 minutes before discarding it. The tannic acid in tea interacts with the iron oxide (rust), forming a natural seal that prevents the reoccurrence of the stain.

What is the difference between Japanese and Chinese teapots?

The first thing to know is that there are two main Japanese tea sets: kyusu and chawan. Both have unique features that make them great for different drinkers.

Kyusu: is the most popular type of Teapot in Japan, and it’s made from clay.

Kyusus are simple, often colorful pottery made in different parts of Japan.

They’re also easy to use:

Fill them with water at room temperature.

Add your loose-leaf tea.

Let it steep for three to five minutes before drinking.

Tetsubin: are made from iron and are often used as utility pots in Japanese homes. They’re small compared to other teapots, which makes them perfect for brewing one cup of tea at a time.

Tetsubin is also known for its ability to keep heat and keep your tea warm longer than other types of pots.

Chawan (China Teapot): come in various designs, from simple white cups with a single line of decoration to elaborate tea sets with many pieces and intricate patterns.

What teapot material is best for Japanese tea?

The best teapot material for Japanese tea is ceramic.

Ceramic is the best material for making teapots because it retains heat well, keeping your hot tea longer.

Ceramics also allows you to steep the leaves many times without bitterness.

Ceramic teapots are also very durable and easy to clean.

Porcelain is another excellent material for a tea kettle.

Porcelain tea cups don’t interact with the tea leaves, so you get a perfect cup every time. But, they are more fragile than ceramic and may chip if dropped or knocked against hard surfaces.

Conclusion

Japanese tea sets are trendy, and the Teapot is just as important as the cups. There’s a wide range of sizes available: large or small, with lids or without.

The Japanese tea set is a beautiful and functional addition to any kitchen. The cups are delicate and easy to handle, while the kettles provide an elegant way to ensure that your tea stays hot.

There’s no right or wrong answer when choosing the best Japanese tea set for your needs. It all boils down to what you want and how often you use it.
