Dishes are usually flavored with coconut milk or vinegar. The country also has pancit noodles, which are Chinese in origin, but Filipinos have made their own version called Pancit Palabok.

Early Filipinos lived in small villages called barangays, hunted, gathered food, and fished for their meals. These groups are the precursors to what is now known as the Philippines.

It was 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines during his exploration of what is now known as the Pacific Ocean. The Spaniards then took control of the Philippines for 300 years.

In 1898, the United States defeated Spain in war and acquired Guam and the Philippines from them. After World War II, the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth with Manuel Roxas at its head until independence was granted in 1946.
